building nimba NOW - URGENT! DONATIONS NEEDED! CONTRIBUTE HERE

In January of 2013, Nimba made its first step in building the Nimba Center: clearing the land at Bentouryah and building a perimeter wall to secure the property. Thanks to ongoing donations from our commmunity and proceeds from our fabulous fundraising events, we've been able to keep on building throughout the year. Click here to see more photos from the construction project.
Nimba knows that the key to realizing our goals is to keep the ball rolling on our projects, and we need your help to ensure that construction is continuous. Moreover, due to upcoming zoning changes in Nongo, Youssouf may no longer be able to host his Dance & Drum Workshop at Bagatai. The Workshop is a huge source of yearly income for our Guinean community and is a cherished event for dancers and drummers from around the world. We want to make sure that the Workshop can continue as Nimba moves forward into becoming an even more beautiful, spacious home for dance & drum studies year-round.

the nimba center

Bentouryah, Nimba's beautiful 14 acres of land near the base of Mount Kakilouma, will be the site for the Nimba Center for Arts and Sustainable Energy. Located about an hour's drive from Gbessia Airport in Conakry, Bentouryah is a recently booming village in between Conakry and Coyah, replete with natural beauty and a bustling local market. The Nimba Center will be an off-grid performing arts education center and will serve as a home base for a range of volunteer projects in renewable energy, sustainability, arts, and education. It will serve as an artist retreat and performance space for performing artists in Guinea and from around the world, and will help reinvent Guinea as year-round hub for dance & drum training and tradition.

electrifying bagatai - completed! check it out here

Bagatai, our African headquarters in Nongo, is also an artist-in-residence compound, event space, and home to dancers, musicians and their families. In this area of Conakry, people live and work for days with unreliable and intermittent grid power, supplemented by diesel generators. The generators are costly, unreliable and a major source of air pollution in the city. In winter 2011-2012, Nimba collaborated with solar experts and local tradesmen to design and install a solar PV array at Bagatai. Establishing Bagatai as a prototype of sustainable living and artistic production fueled by sunlight was a crucial step in achieving Nimba's long-term vision.
